Greene Avenue Residence

The owners of a four-story brownstone sought to create a new duplex for their growing family and design business. The duplex is organized with the entry, living room, kitchen, guest bath and flexible office/bedroom space at the ground floor and two new bedrooms with shared bath at the second floor. Connecting the two levels is a new stair clad in butcher block treads and risers with hickory slats that screen light cast from a large picture window. Below, the slats infill to create valuable storage space and integrate with a discrete yet light-filled desk to its side. The kitchen utilizes unique finishes, including custom laminated corian and plywood countertops and oriented strand board paneled backsplashes. Ikea panels are repurposed to create a series of wrap around open shelves with integrated LED lighting below. A new flexible space at the street side acts as a design/client meeting area for the business as well as a guest bedroom when needed. Upstairs, the new master and kids bedrooms feature large scale sliding pocket doors that can quickly transform the private spaces into a more open feeling loft for easy interaction. In between, a new grand shared bathroom contains custom wood framed medicine cabinets, a large trough sink, soaking tub and walk-in shower.
